When is the season for Lacrosse?

The main season for high school and middle school (youth) Lacrosse games is March until early June. For improving their Lacrosse skills, the players have a summer season in July and August, and an indoor season in October & November, which allow for more opportunities for umpiring.

How long is a Lacrosse game?

High school varsity, JV and youth games have two - 25 minute halves. The clock runs continuously each half except for the last two minutes, or if a timeout is called with one exception; the clock is stopped after every goal in the Varsity games. Umpires are expected to arrive at the game site 20-30 minutes before game time.

When are Lacrosse games played?

Lacrosse games are generally played in the weekday evenings, and Saturdays.

What are the requirements for becoming an umpire for Lacrosse?

Membership in US Lacrosse (varies from $25, $35, & $50 depending upon your age), and a training session ($25-$35) is required prior to umpiring a game. The cost for the training session for first year umpires includes an umpire kit; whistle, lanyard, rulebook, penalty cards and a flag.

Where can I find Lacrosse umpire uniforms?

There are many companies that provide online shopping. Visit the Resources Page

Who is playing Lacrosse in Oregon and where?

There are teams throughout the Portland area, a team in Salem, four teams in Eugene, a team in Roseburg, and a team in Hood River. The number of teams has grown significantly over the last couple of years, and will continue to grow.

How much do Lacrosse umpires get paid, and how often?

Lacrosse umpires are paid twice during the season, in the third week of April and the middle of June. They receive $35 to $52 per game depending up on their experience, rating and type of game they are umpiring plus $2.50/site unless they travel 50 miles or more roundtrip (see travel information below). If you umpire a game solo (which rarely occurs), you get paid 50% more.

How many umpires are involved in a single Lacrosse game?

There are two umpires per Lacrosse game. The high school semi-finals and finals have three umpires per Lacrosse game.

Is there travel involved in being a Lacrosse umpire?

There is travel, but umpires share the travel as equally as possible throughout the season. If the round-trip travel is 50 miles or more then the umpire is paid mileage at the rate of $0.45/mile for the entire trip.

How many Lacrosse games might I expect to umpire in a season?

That can very significantly. First year umpires generally umpire fewer Lacrosse games, because we attempt to match them up with an experienced umpire on junior varsity and youth games. We try to put experienced umpires on the high school Lacrosse games. We have some umpires that umpire 6 to 10 games a week (three to five nights, two games each night).

How are the umpires scheduled for Lacrosse games?

There is an OWLUA Assignor that schedules the umpires for games. The umpires supply their availability, time, days and areas, to the assignor, who then schedules the umpires for the games. Note, the Assignor receives 3% of whatever each umpire earns to compensate them for scheduling the umpires during the season. Assignments are posted online.

What about college Lacrosse games?

Another group assigns the college games. As your umpire skills improve there will be opportunities to umpire at that level. The majority of their games are on weekends.
